I'm wary of that argument

because people define "contributing to society" in so many different ways. I've heard lots of conservatives grumbling about how people on welfare are failing to "contribute to society". Or a mentally ill person who can't work and needs to be taken care of, or somebody confined to a hospital bed, etc., etc. Of course, the argument could be made that they are contributing, I would probably make it myself, but others would certainly see it differently.
