For example I support higher taxes and more social programmes, even though almost none of them are things which I will benefit from. Like you I support quite a stiff inheritance tax, though what we have now over here qualifies as stiff enough, even though that almost certainly means I will have to pay quite a bit when my parents die. (We had to hand over £70,000 for my grandparents.)
The other thing which comes to mind is that I would vote in favour of putting something like a wind farm up near where I live, if it was the best site to do so, even though that would make it a slightly less nice place.
Like [private], most of the time I'd consider policies that follow my principles to be in my interests as well, so the situation isn't likely to come up.
