It'd also be quite meaningless were I to do so.
why? i'm not sure what you mean here, unless you mean voting is meaningless....
I can't recall a single instance where I was ever faced with the opportunity to vote for/against something based on my principles
i'm not asking about specific times you've voted that way. i've never had the opportunity to vote for or against the death tax - but i know, without a doubt, which way i'd vote....meaning my feelings about taxes in general (no, not "TAX EVERYTHING" liberal, although it's easy for others to see me that way) would trump my personal stake in it.
i guess just take the question as "what causes/measures/laws/etc do you support even if they're somehow detrimental to you personally, and which ones do you oppose even though they directly benefit you?"
No idea -- I don't have kids, and I'm also embarrassingly disconnected from such matters as school budgets, having no idea what the schools can afford currently versus what they want to be able to afford.
but don't your taxes go towards local school budgets?
i'll answer for myself. i don't have to worry about switching to "FUND OUR SCHOOLS!" when having a kid, because i already think that too few of my taxes go towards our schools (here in town, here in the state, here in the country, etc).
there are lots of examples to think of. voting against medical marijuana in your state when you're happy that your grandfather with cancer lives in colorado. voting against gay marriage and claiming to be tolerant of gays.
hell, it could even be something like "i'm all in favor of porn not being treated differently from any other type of publication, but i'll vote to keep the law saying only those over 18 can purchase it."
i've got one i'm not proud of, precisely because my selfish interests trump my politics. i'd vote against any tax increase on cigarettes - hell, i'd vote for a decrease. but only because i smoke. before i smoked, i was all in favor of increasing cigarette taxes to pay for smoking-related problems. when i quit, i'll probably revert to that point. but even though i think cigarettes should be taxed highly, i would really like them to be cheaper so i wouldn't have to pay so much.
