I'd recommend giving Microsoft Security Essentials a go. It's anti-virus and anti-spyware rolled into one, and so far I've been greatly impressed with its very low resource footprint - never before have I been able to run a complete system scan so quickly and with virtually no noticeable impact to system performance! I've run it under XP, Vista, and 7 all with great results so far.
