It would be very easy for the right-controlled media (which is a very large section of it) to portray that as weakness in the Dems and turn some voters off them.
Yeah, not buying the right-controlled media line, especially since there are Democrats publicly criticizing Obama, and other than Fox "News" no one is picking up and echoing those criticisms. By and large, the media has been treating Obama extremely favorably, and even when they do criticize/chastise him it's about things that hardly even matter.
Case in point: Lots of Democrats opposed the indefinite detention clauses in the NDAA, and at least one publicly stated that it was Obama's White House that requested those provisions be added in the first place. The media reaction? Zilch, or at most pointing out GOP support and defense of those provisions. I've yet to see a major news outlet (even Fox "News") make a big deal about the White House's support of those provisions -- hell, the impression you get listening to what media coverage there is of the NDAA is that the whole indefinite detention thing was the Republicans' idea!
There's also very little criticism in the media over Obama's flagrant disregard of the Constitution and federal law as he charged into Libya, and absolutely none about his hypocrisy on that point. Ditto his hypocrisy over the wiretaps, and zilch about his anti-PATRIOT Act campaign promises that lead to him signing the PATRIOT Act extension!
Don't get me wrong, the media isn't making him out to be some kind of glorious superhero and savior, but neither are they leveling the serious and legitimate criticisms at him like they can and should be, and like they did to Bush (well, after the hyper-"patriotic" blind support they gave him in the lead-up to war after 9/11).
They certainly won't be poking the media about two party hegemony right now because it's working in their favour
Neither of the two parties will ever do this. Whether it's their guy or the other side's guy in the White House, the two-party hegemony guarantees that they'll always be in power, even when the other party fully controls both branches of government -- even when solidly in the minority, they maintain a strong level of influence over government and policy, and they won't do anything to endanger that.
Some of what he's done has really been a betrayal of the support base that helped him win and they can't be happy about that.
True, and a lot of Democratic voters and politicians do indeed feel betrayed and regret having supported him. And they're even publicly stating their discontent -- which, again, the media could be expounding upon, but they're too busy giving hyper-favorable coverage to OWS (while still taking the time to deliver unfair jabs at the Tea Party when they can).
