My suggestion is to ditch that idea entirely and go with cloud backup. I use crashplan.com because the storage amount is close to unlimited (I have a couple hundred gigs with them). It'll take a couple months for your initial upload to complete but once it's complete, differential backups are easy.
If you really need locally held removable less-volatile storage... consider an LTO drive on ebay... companies should be trying to ditch them like crazy these days. I'm still using LTO-3 at work right now... eventually I'll come up with the right online solution instead.
