I'm mostly concerned with storing images and video. Over the years, I've accumulated several hundred gigs of files from digital cameras, and it continues to grow. A couple times a year I get my act together and burn stuff to DVDs, so as not to lose it to a hard drive failure. Problem is, individual DVDs just don't hold enough. It's getting to be impractical.
Nothing in my house is blu ray at the moment, but I'm guessing that's what I need to move to? A DVD holds 4.7 GB while a blu ray disc holds 25. So by going to blu ray I can reduce the number of discs by a factor of about five, correct? But there's also dual-layer blu ray discs capable of holding 50 GB, yes? And something called BDXL that can hold 100 GB?
On Newegg I was looking at this burner: LG Black 14X BD-R 2X BD-RE 16X DVD+R 5X DVD-RAM 12X BD-ROM 4MB Cache SATA BDXL Blu-ray Burner,3D Play Back (WH14NS40) - OEM, which is one of the cheaper ones but has decent reviews. It says it supports 25 and 50 GB discs as well as BDXL. Newegg does not appear sell BDXL discs, so I wonder is that even a thing yet? The burner also supports something called m-disc, which seems to be advertised as a more reliable type of DVD storage?
So advise me, people! What do I need to know about backing up files on optical storage in the year 2012?
