I was paying 1,200 for "family coverage" for COBRA on a very cheesy HMO plan this last summer.
In Colorado we have a system called "Cover Colorado" which is a state subsidized agency for people who cannot otherwise get affordable health insurance. It's sort of designed to cover the "gap" of those who get Medicaid, Medicare, and those with full employer coverage.
It's contracted with a local insurance company and acts like a normal-ish plan - costs around $500/month.
So that's at least better than what you've got... I wonder if NJ has something similar?
Or maybe you could do a "company of 1" type of coverage?
