It's not very realistic, she'd have lost her job long ago, and you can't buck the rules the way she does. Mercy (another show about nurses) is at least a little more accurate in that it shows the lives behind the nurses, the dynamics amongst nurses, how sometimes they take their work home with them and it affects them deeply. Plus it's just more entertaining. Hawthorne is called Hawthorne because it's about her. Not about nursing. The whole point of the show is to outline her life, hence the daughter/mother in law/ dead husband's suicidal friend tangent.
And so you know, the job is NOT supposed to come first. In every interview, inservice, seminar I've been to, the point always comes up about balance. Used to, nurses were expected to put the job first. That created burnt out, bitter, and dangerous nurses. The job inherently requires a lot of a person, but you're not supposed to take it home with you, and personal lives need to come first except for the 36 hours/week you're in the hospital.
