You're right, thermophiles are uni-cellular. I could swear there's a similar classification for multi-cellular critters that thrive in very similar environments... I'll have to come back to this if I can remember anything.
My OP was kind of confusing, now that I take another look at it. Or maybe "confused" is the proper term. I mention SETI, and then the rest of it's about the academics arguing about whether or not there is life out there, but then ignoring the possibility of non-us-like life as they define the parameters we would need.
At least, that's what it's meant to be about. I wrote it poorly. :-(
