The Search

We're searching the cosmos looking for radio signals from other intelligent species. Who says they're using radio? Maybe they figured out a different way to communicate. Or maybe their basic form of communication can't be transmitted by radio - for example, maybe their sole form of communication is via pheromones.

We're searching the cosmos for water-bearing rocky planets within the "livable zone" orbiting particular types of stars. Never mind the fact that we've found life on this planet that doesn't fit in - thermophyles, for example, could thrive on planets that sit closer to a sun than the "livable zone" dictates.

SETI and similar projects aren't looking for just any intelligent life - they're looking for us on duplicate Earths.
