A poll found that 52% of New York City residents oppose this building. However, only 37% of Manhattanites oppose it, and the building will be in Manhattan. It's in the outer boroughs where opposition runs higher. Staten Island's opposition was 73% in the poll. Staten Island is the type of blue collar area where one might expect to find retrograde attitudes.
However, some of the highest-profile criticism is coming from points far from NYC. It seems even people from Alaska think they can tell New York not to allow this building.
Ultimately it's a moot point, since we don't put people's rights up for a popular vote in this country. (unless you're gay)
