We'll see if that holds in the days to come, but wow that looks like a decisive Kerry victory.
I want to talk about the visual aspect for a second. Bush to me looked rather goofy looking. A couple times I pictured him as a grown-up Alfred E. Newman. His head bobbled sometimes as he talked and he stuttered a lot. Kerry displayed a contrasting appearance. He stood tall and looked strong. I thought he cut a very presidential-looking figure. In fact, I thought it was the best he's looked -- not so Lurch-ish. And none of the weird make-up look that Gore had in 2000. So I think appearance-wise, Kerry definitely looked more presidential than the president. And his voice almost had a hint of Reaganishness in it at times, which I've never heard before.
I think Kerry did a decent job answering the questions. I was extremely pissed off that he didn't explain his vote on the $87 billion when given the opportunity. He allowed Bush to get away with spinning it in a misleading way. I was really unhappy about that. But he did admit that he made a verbal gaffe over that vote, which the media is making a big deal over. I think the media tends to back off something when a politician admits a mistake, so hopefully the topic of this vote will fall off the media radar.
Bush didn't go in armed with a lot of things to say. He repeated the same things over and over. He said something about sharing a laugh with a widow and then expressing his condolences over her husband's (son's?) death in Iraq. He stuttered on the word "freedom" (!). He rolled his eyes at least once while Kerry was talking. It was a shaky performance for him, for sure.
