We've seen that prior jobs are not necessarily an indicator of performance. Governor? That certainly didn't help Dubya. So I don't know, maybe you just need to get a sense of the person: do they want "yes men" around them, or do they seek differing opinions? Have they gotten things done, and shown good judgement? Do they agree with you on most issues? Do you find them reassuring, and trust their vision for the country?
Really, there is a crapshoot element to it, because nothing prepares one for the presidency, and it is impossible to say in advance how any person will handle it. You end up picking the person who you believe has the best chance to get it right. Prior job experience is only one of many factors to consider.
