Sims 2 was good, but I have no idea about Sims 3.. then again, I'm sure it's going to be at least as good. Thinking about it, if you were starting off buying Sims now, I'd probably go ahead and get the newest version. It will be a long time before we give in and buy Sims 3, since we have Sims 2 with several expansion packs (and it's still a perfectly good game).

Also: have you tried the Rollercoaster Tycoon series, or other sim-type games? We have the original Rollercoaster Tycoon and one of the expansions, and I really like it.
