Kids are smarter than we give them credit for. They can tell the difference between winning and losing whether they get a trophy or not. (When my brother went to elementary school they changed the marking system from A - F to 1 - 5, presumably so nobody would have to get a D or an F. But the kids had no trouble figuring out that a 2 and a 1 were basically a D and F, respectively). Which makes the whole thing kind of pointless, but kids are still experiencing losing and failure, no matter how much well meaning parents want to shield them from it.
Every generation thinks the generation that came after them is useless, spoiled, etc. etc.. This is just more of the same.
And that article you linked does an extrodinarily poor job of making its case. The examples of the "current epidemic of narcissism" include Kanye West, Mark Sanford, and Joe Wilson who were born in 1977, 1960 and 1947 respectively. Hardly a part of the "everybody gets a trophy" generation.
