if a member of a marginalized group tells me they're offended by a word, I'll make an effort to stop using it. And not just around that person, because you never know if a person you're talking to might be gay, or have an invisible disability or whatever else and may find the word offensive. Once I've been told: "Actually, a lot of people find that term offensive", I'll just make the effort to remove it from my vocabulary. I don't use gay (in a perjorative sense) or retarded anymore, lame has been a little harder to get rid of but we'll see.
