The reason I recommend drilling, is that it will keep almost all criminals from pulling any data from the drives. Data recovery firms charge thousands of dollars to recover data from physically damaged hdd's. Of course in a corporate setting this wouldn't be good enough.
However, after reading your post and linked articles, I'll stop recommending drilling.
