strong processor + SSD caching.
the money you save buying a smaller SSD can go towards ramping up the chip.
of course, that requires a z68 board. but the setup i'm using is amazing.
Sonar PE (my recording/mixing/mastering program) is a pretty good benchmark for both. working with multiple large, uncompressed, high-quality sound files requires the disk transfer rate to be fairly high (sometimes larger than 100MB per, and when you've got 15 tracks running simultaneously, not to mention recording/deleting/etc....yeah). sound editing needs a lot of CPU power, especially since most effects are real-time (say, a few compressors, reverb, chorus, etc, all individually running during playback, instead of modifying the file beforehand, the way i had to do it back when computers were slower).
so far, my setup handles it all without a single problem - a very important point when a single 50ms drop can ruin an entire take, and the sound engine setup is incredibly finicky (when you have a problem there among the many variables and settings, the answey is always, everywhere around the internet, "keep trying things until you stop getting errors").
so i'm running an i5 2500K with a 40GB SSD cache. very happy with it.
