over desktops: Portability.
So to answer the question of whether or not you want a new desktop PC or to make the switch to a laptop PC, you have to first ask yourself this: Do you want portability?
Even though I very rarely take my laptop anywhere, I love having a laptop because I can lounge on the couch watching TV while I'm using it. [private] also loves being able to take hers into the kitchen so she can read recipes off of it while she's cooking. And sometimes it's handy to set it up next to my desktop's monitor so I can reference stuff on one screen while working on the other.
You want to play WoW. That strongly leans you in the direction of a desktop PC, as desktops tend to be more powerful than laptops, and power is what you need for gaming. That's not to say you can't do the same thing on a laptop, but a desktop capable of playing WoW well will cost you half (or less!) what a laptop capable of playing it equally well will.
Streaming video, e-mail, personal paper work -- damn near anything with a keyboard, a monitor, and an internet connection will do that. Hell, there are cell phones these days that can do all that!
In your case, WoW is your primary factor for determining the computer that will fit your needs. Find a computer that will play WoW well enough for you, and you've found your new computer.
