And the electrical attributes and you'll be fine. So long as it can deliver the appropriate number of amps at the appropriate voltage, and the plug fits, you should be cool.

And yeah, it happens pretty frequently if you're an idiot about how you treat your stuff (like my elder daughter), and more rarely if you're actually careful (like me or my younger daughter.) That's probably why you're so surprised by it. You're not a jackass with your things and so it's actually somewhat rare that they get broken. ;)
