I live in a small town that is mostly suburban sprawl, but the "downtown" area has always been my favorite place to spend my time. I used to live walking distance from his ideal type of main street and it was lovely! I've spent time in city squares in Ecuador and the open outdoor living area is very welcoming, even as a tourist. None of the locals needed the craft show to draw them there!

Are there any places besides huge cities that are like he's talking about? The large cities in NC, TN, and SC aren't like that, for sure.
