I highly recommend finding 20 minutes to watch this interesting talk on "the tragedy of suburbia" by James Howard Kunstler. Very interesting (and good for some LOLs throughout).
Kunstler argues that suburban development since WWII has created endless "places not worth caring about" across the US. He's got the slides to prove it. I pretty much agree with everything he says, except I think it must be pointed out that new urbanism has so far failed to deliver anything substantial or worth caring about.
