I happen to get paid hourly and I happen to have excellent working conditions and benefits. Most of my friends in the same industry (programming/software engineering) are salaried and yet required to work endless hours of uncompensated overtime, usually while cramped into dark crowded cube farms that make sweatshops look comfortable.
That's the kind of situation that a union could rectify. Most of us are damn pleased with the size of our paychecks, we just want to get paid for our overtime (or no longer be required to work said overtime) and work in more comfortable conditions.
