We've had this debate many times... how should we respond to ever-increasing energy demands? I've always come down on the side of alternative energy investments. Other people have suggested other ideas, including more nuclear plants.
Now, when I was thinking about the war, I asked myself if I would be willing to personally fight in it. My answer was no. So how could I favor sending other people to fight it? I couldn't; not by my moral code, anyway.
Apply that thinking to energy policy. Say you support more nuclear plants. Would you want one built in your town? I've flirted with the idea of favoring more nuclear plants, but you know what? I don't want to live anywhere near one. So why should I favor building more, as long as they're not in my back yard? They will be in someone's back yard. Now as for solar... yes, I would have solar in my back yard. Literally! Not only do I support the technology, but I'm more than willing to host it on my own property. Not so for nuclear.
