Christian Shepard said that "everything was real" when he was talking about what happened on the island AND otherwise...
The only Purgatory idea I got out of it was the "dual timeline" during the last season... I think THAT was their Purgatory.
So I guess you could safely conclude that The Island is simply the most important place on Earth. No telling if Hugo remained on the Island for 400 years or so just because he appears in Purgatory (beyond Time, as Christian said). Everyone died eventually is what he said.... which makes sense as even Richard Alpert began to age finally.

I was disappointed though by the theology - but I probably should be. Separating myself from that though, I did enjoy the ending. It wasn't as "OMG" as I had hoped but it was rather beautiful, charming... romantic. I like that the "net" idea was that Love beats all.
