I have believed for quite some time that our evolution can no longer proceed down natural roads. For evolution to work there must be a survival of the fittest in order to pass down only the beneficial traits and eliminate those that are harmful. In society today (at least in modernized countries) it is survival of everybody, not the smartest nor the strongest, nor only the most successful. So knowing this how can we progress into the future as a species?
If you are a fan of movies like me you can compare the natural way with the movie Idiocracy, and the way I feel we should be going with Gataca (though obviously the political background of Gataca is abhorrent).
Genetic alteration or technical alteration of our nature is the only way forward in my view. We should be working on genetic alteration in order to make ourselves stronger, more efficient, more resilient, and smarter. Then add to this the technology to help us survive where biology can not.
Science to repair cell damage as it happens could extend our lifespans indefinitely. While our genetic alteration would enable us to survive in more hostile climates and even other planets so overpopulation would not be a problem.
Perhaps we should have started years ago with specific breeding but that time is past, such a method of improvement could never match the pace of technological improvement. But of course there would still need to be significant variation between people, even some randomness to keep everybody from being too much alike, though I think people would be more worried about us becoming too different especially when it comes to surviving in alien environments.
What do you all think?
