Recently Herman Cain, now employed at Fox, explained that the voting majority that reelected Barack Obama are stupid. That's what Republicans are up against: too many stupid people voting for Democrats out of their stupidity.
Bill O'Reilly this week went back down a well-worn path, repeating the argument that there are just too many lazy people being bribed with goodies by Democrats. This is one of Limbaugh's prime arguments as well.
I suppose this sort of commentary is what their audiences are looking for. But what does it really accomplish for Republicans? Not a heck of a lot. Insulting the majority of voters is not a way to persuade them to your side. And it certainly doesn't explain why millions of financially stable, college-educated Americans pulled the lever for Obama last November.
Furthermore, by going to this easy excuse, which flatters their side while bashing the other, these commentators are actively discouraging true self-reflection on their positions and on where the country is moving. In other words, they're intentionally avoiding looking deeper into why Republicans may've lost, which makes them less likely to adjust course for the next election. They make it harder for actual Republican politicians to make those necessary adjustments. They'll always have their excuse, though: too many dumb, lazy people gosh darn it!
