It's kind of scary how much your politics can influence charitable donations.
Rice University found in their study that just the wording of a request for aid will make a person of a specific leaning up to 3 times more likely to give.
Romney's situation isn't that unusual either. Some stats also say that almost 40% of Americas annual charitable donations are as part of a tithe of some form.
I don't personally see how this can work in the long term, though an obvious example of volunteers making up for a lack of government funds is the London games. When you walked through London at times, in the area, it seemed their were more pink shirts than public.
