There is a man in Georgia named Troy Davis who is on edeath row. Davis is supposed to be executed on September 21, 2011.
The thing is, Troy Davis is innocent. The facts of the case in which he was convicted of murdering a cop do not match his conviction. In fact, Davis was convicted only based on eyewitness testimony. Since the case, seven of the witnesses have said they were pressured into telling revisionist stories by the pigs, stories that incriminate Davis and do not match what they actually saw. One of the few witnesses who maintains it was Davis is named as the real killer by the recanting witnesses.
Troy Davis is African-American, so this case is almost certainly a symptom of racism in the legal and justice systems of America.
The Supreme Court has refused to hear this case. A retrial was denied, because there was "no real evidence that Davis is innocent". So now the only opportunity left, short of breaking into death row with illegal artillery, is to grant clemency to Davis. Clemency will sentence him to life in prison instead of execution. It will buy time for the justice system to get this case straightened out, so when they finally determine Davis was not the real killer, Davis will still be alive to see his acquittal.
