Here is a cool graph thingo that lets you compare approval ratings for presidents going back to Harry Truman.
President Obama compares most similarly to Ronald Reagan, as you can see below.
The blue line represents Obama's poll numbers
The purple line is Reagan (first three years)
If this pattern holds, Obama will be in the low 40s by this time next year.
Also interesting to note is that most presidents have a decline in their approval rating in their last few years in office. The longest, steepest decline belongs to W. Nixon's, of course, was pretty bad, too.
