The nature of the states in the red state/blue state divide made it far easier for Democrats to go on offense than for Republicans to do so. The turf the Dems were invading was sparsely populated, which meant relatively few Democratic operatives were required to oversee efforts there, and media ad buys were pretty cheap. If the Republicans want to make headway into the Northeast and California, they must deal with far larger populations, which will require far greater resources. I hadn't considered that. But it does seem pretty unlikely that Republicans will be competitive any time soon in those places.
