the lottery vs. your country

The lottery. Millions of people come together and toss there money in to a pot with the hopes that they will win it all. The benefits of which only reach a few and some times only one person.

Sure I understand that this does help the economy in part. However can't we do more.
The country is deep in debt and this we realize we have it shoved in our faces every day. Right now the U.S.A. is facing a debt of $10.802 trillion (as of feb 19th).

Last night the NJ lottery was up to 174 million. There seems to be some thing wrong to me here.
Americans should come together and realize that instead of putting there money to the benefit of the few. they should put there money to the benefit of many.

I am not even going to try to do the math or look it up because that much math would make my head spin.
However I feel (with out much scientific backing) that if all of the Americans who put money in to the lottery put that money for even a short time in to there countries debt it would do something (maybe not a lot but something) to help.

Most Americans in my opinion wouldn't go for this though because they would feel they would just be tossing money out there and would see nothing for them selves as they would when some one wins the lottery.

However i think if we all came together and put this money in to the debt that we all would benefit. That if the debt started to go down that our economy would begin to heal.

I could be wrong and this is a theory that I know will never come to light. I don't know a lot about math or the government but for some reason this is what i was left thinking last night and I decided to share.
