The Fear of Communism

So I was thinking about something that seems to have happened ever since the end of World War I. I'll show you my views later on, but I ask you this:

Why is the majority of the world moving towards socialism, but yet it continues to reject and fear communism?

Obviously socialism and communism go hand in hand. Why does it seem that people are growing more accustomed to socialism, yet they have an instilled fear of communism within them? Is it because they have a narrowed mindset that if they accept communism, they are only as good as the Russians, or some other farfetched view?

I'm not completely understanding this. Care to give a different perspective or explain?
