Mandatory voting

I was having a conversation with a friend the other day about how a democracy isn't working the way it should be if only 30% of the people vote. His solution is that voting should be mandatory. (I think it is in Australia but I'm not sure.) What does everybody think?

I'm against it, because I'm worried that if people have to vote, they'll do so without bothering to get informed first. I mean, if somebody doesn't care enough to vote if they don't have to, chances are they're not going to care enough to research the issues before voting if they were forced to. And people casting votes without being informed is worse than not voting at all.
