Please educate me on cheap printer ink

I don't print things very often, so I don't frequently purchase ink. But when I do, it's easier just to pick up the standard ink cartridges from the local office store and pop 'em in. But I also know buying retail brand-name ink is for suckers. I know there are far cheaper ways of refilling the ink. But I've never pursued it. Hopefully some 4Ker can advise me on saving some $$$.

I have a Canon MG5220, if that helps.
