So nat wanted to know some of my favs for non-mainstream music since I live under a rock and don't follow it for the most part (read: i know 1 song by MJ). So here's some stuff that you may or may not want to check out.
First and foremost: the Flaming Lips. [private] says they're mainstream, but I know of only 2 people in real life who have listened to them.
In terms of older stuff: The Move, Emmitt Rhodes, Jimmy Cliff, Harry Nilsson, Mary Hopkin (=X). I'm forgetting a few here...hmm. I've been listening to too much new stuff.
Now newer stuff I'm very biased and completely love electronic stuff. So...I'll try not to flood you with electronic artists since I don't know of any people on here who actually like and follow electronic music.
We have:
Anamanaguchi (8bit)
Crushr (8bit)
Random (8bit)
the Flashbulb (electronic)
Venetian Snares (electronic)
Henry Homesweet (electronic)
65daysofstatic (electronic/instrumental)
EEPROM (electronic/hip hop)
Futurecop! (electronic/dance)
Heads We Dance (dance)
My Dear Disco (dance)
Beautiful Small Machines (pop)
I Fight Dragons (pop/alt) [these guys are geeky]
Owl City (pop/electronic)
SHOOPS (pop/hip hop)
minipop (pop/rock)
Florence and the Machine (rock/alternative)
My First Earthquake (rock/alternative)
Ra Ra Riot (rock/alternative)
Canoe (alternative)
Gavin Castleton (alternative) (<- from RI :D)
Olafur Arnalds (classical)
Malpais (folk)
Rebelution (reggae) [check out "Safe and Sound"]
RAC [Remix Artist Collective] (remixes)
[private] Street (celtic)
So if you're not into the electronic scene per se, there's plenty of newer stuff up there that's not part of it. I left out a ton of my electronic favorites but to your benefit. Otherwise you'd have to sift through a much longer list in which there'd be a much higher chance you wouldn't like the artist since I have some very weird electronic tastes. <_< Also most of this stuff is in English. I excluded most of my foreign multicultural stuff (read: i like korean/asian/hispanic music a lot)
A large majority of the music I mentioned for the newer stuff can be found online. Most of it can be found on thesixtyone.com.
