Things like the persecution of Galileo have put Science on the defensive against Religion. Persecution has a decidedly polarizing effect on all parties involved, and even though the Church has apologized for the way they treated Galileo, both sides are still at loggerheads.
I don't mean to say that Religion is fully to blame, I just can't think of an example of Science blatantly attacking Religion.
