I'm returning home (the church) as Maya (my go-to girl when Marcus is tired or hurt or, as in this case, missing) with a rucksack on her back filled with desperately-needed food. Being that I'm coming up the road from the west, I'm just passing the construction site when I spot the horde on the road ahead of me. Fortunately they're shambling away from me, right toward the readied traps of my outpost. I wait a bit.
Cue glorious fireball explosion and the end of that horde.
Being early(ish) in my game play and not yet fully realizing the impacts of sounds on zed behavior, I stand up and start trotting forward again. Zed walks in front of me toward where the horde went "boom", sees me, and I start whacking with my crowbar. Just as it goes down another comes up to me, and I continue whacking. Then another. And another. Just as I realize I'm in trouble...
"I got nothing left."
Maya's all tuckered out, I've got no snacks on me (having consumed them all in an earlier "oh crikey!" moment), I just popped my last painkillers, and the zeds are still coming -- it would have been easier going toe-to-toe with that horde! I turn and start limping away as quickly as I can, hoping to see that empty stamina bar start filling up again. Somehow though I'm staying ahead of them, and then as soon as I can I start sprinting back to the safety of the church.
Having escaped that "horde" (or so I thought...), I spot Ed at the edge of the church parking lot coming back from a supply run fighting off 3 zeds, with a fourth approaching quickly. My stamina back, I figure I should help, seeing as how he's only out here because I called for a supply pick-up (he's bringing back desperately-needed meds, my home supply of those being almost entirely gone). I intercept the fourth zed and just as I'm about to swing -- it screams!
I nearly crapped myself right there!
Since all this is taking place at night, I didn't spot the tell-tale signs of the Screamer. With renewed urgency I finish that sucker off, then hurry over to Ed to help him with the (now down to two) zeds on him. We make quick work of them, and I take a minute to catch my breath as Ed hustles through the gate. As I start to follow him, I hear moans behind me, and quickly turn.
To see the "horde" from earlier that I had thought I'd escaped -- perhaps now augmented by new zeds alerted by the Screamer, I can't be sure since I wasn't counting -- shambling straight toward me!
Now it's important to realize that this is all taking place while Alan is way up north, his AI bugged and face-plowing him into a wall (although I didn't at the time know this latter part). And Maya's the only other shooter I have right now who mans the guard tower, but I'm playing her at the moment -- which means I've got no fire support despite being practically on the doorsteps of home base!
In all honesty what followed was a blur of frantic, panicky action, and I'm not clear entirely what went down. All I know is there were flames, frantic mashing of X, and more than a few rounds spent from my inventory -- but somehow I managed to not only survive, but slaughter the entire horde! Maya limps inside with barely a sliver of health remaining, feeling like frickin' Rambo, drops off the supplies, and then I log off for some much-needed rest.
