Rule Number One:
Never fly anything you can't afford to lose.
Before you undock, take a look at your ship, what it's got equipped, what's in its hold, and even what implants you yourself have installed. Assume you will lose all of it. Then ask yourself if you can really afford that. If you lose your shiny new cruiser but still have your tricked-out frigate to fall back on, no big deal, right? But if you had to scrap and sell everything just to barely be able to afford that frigate, you probably shouldn't be flying it.
This goes for your clone, too -- always keep your clone updated so that if you get podded, you won't lose any skills. And when you do get podded, always remember to immediately buy yourself a replacement clone!
