Lichdom:
Somewhere in a dark necromancer's hideaway, you find a book of forbidden knowledge. Among its dark pages is a description for how to turn yourself into a powerful, immortal being known as a lich. Should you choose to follow this path and gather the items required to craft your phylactery, a repository for your now-immortal soul, and perform the final ritual that binds your soul to it, you yourself become a lich.
Among the perks to being a lich are:
* High resistance to magic
* A permanent mage armor effect (not sure yet which one; also not sure if this would be tied to wearing no other armor or not)
* New powers (not sure yet what these would be)
* Draugr do not attack you(? Or perhaps a power to command them? Or both?)
* Near-immortality!
The latter would function as so: Your phylactery must always be carried on you; should you remove it, you will die. (I'll actually probably just mark it as a quest item so that you can't remove it.) If you are ever reduced to less than 1 HP, your body explodes in a blast of cold energy (think the Firestorm spell, but cold), damaging those around you and pushing them back. You body then re-forms into a [private] of its former glory; in addition to no longer having any of your lich perks, you now have the following penalties:
* You are a monster, and as such are attacked on sight by anyone [much like a Stage 4 vampire]
* If I go with draugr not attacking you as a lich, you'll keep that perk in your new form (which will look much like a draugr, in fact)
* Your magicka, health, and stamina are reduced by (some number) each
* You have a vulnerability to magic
* If you are killed in this form, you die
You must now create a new phylactery and again bind your soul into it, at which point your body again re-assumes its previous form, and you again regain the perks that you had previously.
As you can see, there's still a lot I haven't yet formulated on this one. Like, what it even means to be a lich, for one. Other than the phylactery bit, of course, although haven't yet decided what all is necessary to create one. Definitely will require some rare (or rare-ish) ingredients, like perhaps a human heart.
This is a project I'll likely tackle in parallel with Underhold; the player-owned fort is the one I'm most excited about, and both Underhold and Lichdom will likely be difficult, involved projects with much frustration, so being able to put one aside to work on the other for a bit will be very beneficial.
