I'd gone in and removed the Deny hl2.exe permission and written in an allow hl2.exe, but that only applied to the firewall. Apparently the AV has its own definitions list and it randomly decided that that one game was BADWRONGEVIL. Who knew?
I'm now running Comodo's firewall (no extra protections, just the base) and Avira's antivirus. No further issues to report.
