Isn't it fair to ask, then, that because the UK locks people up for 'things that are deemed bad enough by the population', who are they to tell Iran or Saudi Arabia they are wrong for locking up political dissidents, Christian proselytizers, and rape victims?
It's not the punishment so much as the alleged "crime" that is up for criticism.
