After an 11-hour filibuster on the Senate floor by Sen. Rand Paul, the Patriot Act is coming tantalizingly close to sunsetting without being renewed. Of course, the courts have already ruled much of it unconstitutional, so one has to wonder what Obama and the rest see as the "authorities" in it, but in any case it's a damn bright ray of hope that we might finally be able to put this dark chapter of our history to bed once and for all.
