We always hear over and over the stories where a gunman isn't stopped, or at least not until innocent people are hurt or killed.
Yet we also know that the vast majority of criminals -- including violent ones -- would and do avoid confrontation with armed citizens, such as the group of armed thugs who waited in their car outside a fast-food restaurant for a pair of armed citizens to finish eating and leave (and got nabbed by the police when someone reported their suspicious behavior) [no link handy, sorry].
On Tuesday this scenario played out again, this time in a nail salon in Casper, Wyoming. A customer who also happened to carry a concealed weapon saw a gunman reaching for his weapon, and drew her own; the gunman, now facing an armed citizen, fled the scene.
It's so rare for stories of this nature to make even the local papers, because frequently those involved believe no crime was actually committed and simply don't report the confrontation. It's good to see them when they do, though, because despite the media's reporting bias incidents of this nature far outweigh the more tragic ones they love to trumpet all over the national front page.
