President Obama said these words while honoring during a former Polish officer during a Medal of Freedom ceremony:
I didn't catch the error, but here it is: "Polish death camp." This phrasing has now caused a huge uproar in Poland. The Polish foreign minister called it an "outrageous blunder", attributing it to Obama's "ignorance and incompetence." Poland's prime minister attributed the phrasing to either "ignorance" or "bad intentions" (what?). "When someone says 'Polish death camps,' it is as if there were no Nazis, no German responsibility, as if there was no Hitler," he said.
Is there really a threat of anyone thinking the Poles ran the death camps, and that there were no Nazis, no Hitler? Is it not clear that the President was talking about Nazi camps inside Poland? Does the context of the President honoring a Polish Nazi-fighter mean nothing? The Polish PM and foreign minister are being ridiculous.
Before one trip across enemy lines, resistance fighters told him that Jews were being murdered on a massive scale, and smuggled him into the Warsaw Ghetto and a Polish death camp to see for himself. Jan took that information to President Franklin Roosevelt, giving one of the first accounts of the Holocaust and imploring to the world to take action.
