A man walked into a store in Salt Lake City, bought a knife, walked outside and immediately used it to stab two random people in the parking lot. Police say he likely would have continued his rampage were it not for the quick reaction of an armed citizen who pulled out his gun and ordered the knife-wielding criminal to drop his weapon; he complied, and was quickly subdued by employees of the store.
His two victims were still in critical condition a day later, the most recent update I've seen on the story.
The attacker, Kiet Thanh Ly, has a 12-year criminal record that demonstrates escalating criminal behavior, starting with simple trespass and rising to attempted assault [that's a thing?] against an officer and sexual battery and lewdness. Well, until Thursday, when he can likely add two counts of attempted murder.
Police have not identified the armed citizen, saying only that he's from rural Idaho and doesn't want the attention. They also say he did everything exactly right, and have credited him with saving lives.
[Fair warning: Link below is to the most recent update, but is not the best-written piece of journalism out there; for starters, it almost reads like they are attributing the 12-year criminal record to the armed citizen, when in fact it is Ly's.]
