I think this has become a serious danger of an incumbent candidate who doesn't have to show how democratic he is and instead has started to try to take votes away from the republicans by taking their message as his own. I believe during the Clinton campaign they called this strategy triangulation and it worked fairly well unless you were hoping for some democratic style programs to be passed. Instead he passed the largest cut in welfare in my lifetime.
