Canadian tar sands oil (oh [private]..?)

So there's a big debate here in the US about whether to build a new pipeline to bring Canadian oil down to Texas for refining. Proponents say it'll create jobs and bring more ethical oil to our domestic market. Opponents say the extraction process for this oil is very dirty, and the risk of pipe leakage could contaminate land and water supplies. Also among concerns is the extent to which government would claim eminent domain to get the land for the pipeline.

So, maybe [private] (or anyone for that matter) could tell us more about this Canadian oil, and how this whole matter is playing politically in Canada.
