While I'm eagerly anticipating Inner Bruise Day on April 14, this year I have another reason to look forward to it. April 14 has been declared National Youth Rights Day, this being the birthday of John Holt. April 14, 2010 will mark the first National Youth Rights Day to be celebrated in the United States.
At http://www.youthrights.org/forums, the posters are talking about what they'll do to prepare for this day. Some are going to wear special armbands for the event. Others will join in protests against things like the drinking age.
Ever since I was in high school, where my rights were violated and my behavior judged to such a degree that I felt unable to breathe, I've been a youth rights supporter. I believe sincerely if only we lower the voting age a couple of years; end the neo-Prohibition of the Federal Minimum Legal Drinking Age Act; support students' rights and close the loopholes that allow faculty to limit free speech on campus; limit parental authority by lowering the age of majority, abolishing insubordination laws and regulate what rules parents can and can't make their children obey; ensure the rights of medical consent to all people regardless of age; make city curfews illegal; and stop doing silly things like putting age limits on the sale of spray paint and cough syrup, America and the world will be a much better place.
Is anyone else here celebrating?
